The Invention Of Wings: A Detailed Summary About The Book Of Sue Monk Kidd!Sue Monk Kidd's novel "The Invention of Wings" describes three decades long efforts, desires and determination of Sarah Grimke who is the daughter of the wealthy John Grimke along with pains, sorrow, suffering and talented approach of Hetty Handful.The novel is written in the context of American slavery and some social taboos, especially absence of women empowerment was a big issue. Slaves didn't have the right to education. They didn't have their say either. It was totally a man dominated society. If there was a rebellion, it was dealt with an iron hand. If a slave made any mistake there was punishment for him/her. The same happens in the novel. Sarah hates slavery and she raises voice against slavery but is stopped from doing this. Similarly, Hetty Handful, the slave girl, suffers a lot at the hands of her owners. She receives punishment for attending the African Episcopal Methodist Church and her foot is mangled in the wheels of treadmill. Charlotte, Hetty's mother also spends a miserable life as slave of the house.On the other hand, woman rights violation is common everywhere. Sarah tries to teach Handful to read but her own entry into her father's library is banned. She gets engaged to Israel Thomas but it is violently opposed by her brother, Thomas who cancels her engagement on her behalf. Last but not least every positive move by the slaves for their freedom or by women for their rights is thwarted. But the novel keeps its readers stuck up as the representative of the downtrodden section, the slave, Hetty Handful and Women Rights Activist, Sarah Grimke make all out efforts to get their rights. Handful finally throws away clutches of slavery by using her talents as a seamstress along with Sarah who has been against slavery from the first ever whipping that she witnesses when she is a girl. There are lots of ups and downs in the story. The readers will definitely find the book interesting.
